Day Five

I woke to the sound of grunts and groans, the grating scratch of something against dry wood.

“The itch is good,” Buck’s voice, familiar now, even after only one meeting. “Though I’ll still never get used to it, catches me off guard every year.”

“Mmmm,” Odin replied. “These walls work just as well as our beloved trees. The pines and their trunks hurt with such delicious malice, but this, this is soothing to the point of euphoria.”

I blinked slowly before opening my eyes, wondering what scene I would be confronted with. The natural morning light filtered in through the window, the sound of the crows was as incessant as ever, and the smell in the air was musky and thickly masculine. I swallowed, pushing myself up on my hands so I could see the stags.

They were both standing on the other side of the cabin, their heads bent at unnatural angles, rubbing their antlers across the walls and groaning with each nudge.

The blood and velvet were gathering around their hooves on the floor, and their antlers were almost completely refreshed, the process almost complete. I curled my nose as I watched them, both fascinated and somewhat disturbed. The scent of the blood was tangy and each time their hooves caught part of the velvet and it was ground further into the floorboards, a fresh burst was released into the air.

“Little Roe,” Odin smiled as his eyes caught mine. “You’ve caught us in an unflattering position.”

“The shed usually takes twenty-four hours,” Buck said as he dragged his antlers across the wall again. “But we needed to speed things along.”

“We are simply eager,” Odin smirked. “Competition is what keeps the world turning after all.”

I felt nerves knot deep in my belly. A cold shiver of the unknown worked its way along the back of my legs up to my knees. These monsters were speaking in riddles, trying to vex me as much as the crows. But their eyes were kind, and their scent was divine. I breathed it in and smiled.

“You’re smelling sweeter after your rest,” Odin continued. “Ripe and ready.”

He breathed in deeply, sniffing the air much like the first time I had seen him.

“Delicious,” he mused before he rubbed his antlers against the rough wooden walls.

I bit my bottom lip, the nerves mounting.

“Once our velvet is fully shed, we can commence your punishment,” Odin said knowingly.

I barely dared breathe.

“Get settled in place if you like?” Buck mused as he flicked his head to the side and a chunk of bloodied velvet fell to the floor with a wet slap.

“In, in place?” I stammered, looking around the room.

The stags smiled at each other.

“We aren’t fully equipped in this cabin,” Odin said. “But luckily, like our own dens, we have a high table that will suffice. You can be mounted with ease.”

My body trembled with heat and I found myself looking at them both, wondering what would happen next.

Mounted…

They were so very, very handsome. Both of them were dark and dashing, so different
